Papillon Colors

The breed standard states..............

COLOR - Always parti-color, white with patches of any color. On the head color other than white must cover both ears, back and front, and extend without interruption from the ears over both eyes. A clearly defined white blaze and noseband are preferred to a solidly marked head. Symmetry of facial markings is desirable. The size, shape, placement or absence of patches on the body are without importance. Papillons maybe any parti-color, provided nose, eye rims and lips are well-pigmented black. Among the colors there is no preference.

The following faults shall be severely penalized. (1) Nose not black. (2) Color other than white not covering both ears, back and front, or not extending from the ears over both eyes. A slight extension of the white collar onto the base of the ears or a few white hairs interspersed among the color, shall not be penalized provided the butterfly appearance is not sacrificed.

Disqualification - An all white dog or a dog with no white.

Examples of Coat Colors

Black and white

This is a base coat color of white with patches of black.

There are many different shades of Sable and White.

"sable is a pattern, not a color"

Sables come in colors ranging from light tan to Dark red to almost black depending on how much of the Black sable color is in coat.

A "sable" dog hair color refers to a coat where each individual hair is banded with color, typically having a darker tip (black or brown) and a lighter base (red, tan, or apricot), essentially, the hairs are tipped with a darker color, giving the dog a shaded, not solid, color across the coat.

The defining feature of a sable coat is the banding of color on each hair, with the darker color appearing primarily at the tip.

Sable can range from light to dark depending on the amount of dark tipping on each hair, with some dogs showing more pronounced banding than others.

The sable color is a transitional color that is often categorized as "black". The color is determined by the amount of black on the tips of the dog's hairs, and the rest of the hair is different shades of red, gray, or other colors.

Sable dog coat banding can vary in shade, pattern, and heaviness. Some variations include:

general sable: A sable dog with dark banding on its guard hairs that can vary in shade and pattern.
Cream sable: A sable dog with a paler coloring than orange sable.Cream sable dogs can appear silvery as puppies and cream-colored as adults.
Red sable: A sable dog with a coat that ranges from pale honey-gold to  deep mahogany red. Clear sable dogs do not have any black in their coat.
Phantom sable: A sable dog that develops its color over its lifetime. A Phantom sable may be deep tan with black tips and then grow darker until its main body is solid black. It can also be the reverse of this. Appearing black as a puppy and as it ages the lighter color at the base of hair comes thru.

Classic Tri Color

classic tri color is dog on left and middle, white base coat with black patches and tan points (eye brow cheek)

a dog coat color typically consisting of three distinct colors: a base color white with Black markings, and tan points on the face, essentially a pattern of black and tan markings on a white background; meaning the dog has a combination of black, tan, and white fur.
